C.C. Chapman: Two Truths and a Lie

Have you ever played the game Two Truths and a Lie? The rules are quite simple, the players of the game must make 3 statements, 2 of these statements are truth and one (you guessed it) is a lie. Today, boys and girls, we are going to start the game of Two Truths and Lie with C.C. Chapman, the next speaker of SMCDallas.

And so here goes:

  • C.C. lives in a constant state of wanderlust, but has only been on 2 continents.
  • Content Rules is not C.C.’s first published work. Years ago he was published in a poetry anthology.
  • C.C.’s status as a “good guy” started when he was younger by becoming a proud Eagle Scout.

There is a catch to our version of the game. You have to attend this Thursday’s event to find out the answer!

A little bit about C.C. Chapman (the answer to the Two Truth and a Lie will not be found here):

C.C. is the Founder of Digital Dads, where a Dad can be a guy. He is also the creator and host of of the widely popular Managing the Gray podcast and is also a member of the Media Hacks and Cast of Dads podcasts.
He has extensive knowledge of the online space and is a sought after speaker on social media and community building. Over the years he has worked with a variety of clients to build and execute multiple digital marketing programs. He has worked with the likes of The Coca-Cola Company, Discovery Channel, American Eagle Outfitters, HBO and Verizon FiOS among others.
He is a graduate of Bentley University and an avid photographer. His personal blog just celebrated it’s 8th Anniversary with no plans to slow down at all. He lives in Metro West Boston with his wife, two amazing kids and black lab Roxie.

This will be a great event! The first 125 people to register will receive a copy of Content Rules (hint: you are cutting it close if you haven’t registered yet).

As always, a special thanks to our sponsors for this event!! Make sure to give them a big SMCDallas welcome by connecting with them all before the event – @HealthStandards @JaredRey @1400Words @FairmontDallas @KnoxPub.

Leave your guesses in the comments as to which statement you think is a lie.

Social Media Brings People Together for a Cause: Dallas4Japan

The latest reports are saying the earthquake in Japan on March 11th, could become the most expensive earthquake in history. I was at South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) surrounded by the best and brightest in the techie and social media space when I heard about the tsunami. For the following days I saw tweets, instagram photos, Facebook updates, and blog posts of people rallying the support of their friends and network to donate a few dollars or post a donation link on their blog. Mashable’s
Japan Earthquake & Tsunami: 7 Simple Ways to Help post has over 15,000 Facebook shares and 6,000 tweets.

The 7 ways include:

  1. Text to Donate
  2. Donate via Facebook
  3. Buy Virtual Goods (games and apps are donating money)
  4. Embed a Donation Bar on your Blog/Website
  5. “Like” a Cause page on Facebook that is donating per number of new fans
  6. Tweet (specific hashtags)
  7. Donate via iTunes

SMCDallas along with (in no particular order) AAJA, AIGA, AAF Dallas, DFW AMA, DFW SEM, IABC Dallas, PRSA Dallas, Texas Young Professionals (whew that’s a lot of acronyms) and growing number of individuals are joining together with a goal of raising at least $3,000 for the American Red Cross.

The event is Thursday, March 24th from 7-9pm at Aloft Dallas Downtown. All proceeds from ticket sales ($10) will benefit the American Red Cross to support the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Fund. SMCDallas is Joining Forces with TweetDrive! December 8th PubCrawl for Charity

We are excited to announce that Social Media Club of Dallas is joining forces with the National Tweetdrive and Mockingbird Station to raise money for a local Dallas Charity – Vogel Alcove.

The mission of the Vogel Alcove is to provide the youngest children of homeless families with the foundation for success. It is our vision that every child in our community has a home, a self-sufficient family, and a pathway to success in school.

Please RSVP on our Eventbrite event so that we have an accurate headcount to give Mockingbird Station. Also, please bring an unwrapped toy as price of admission and receive a free drink ticket.

If you’d like to help us spread the word you invite your friends via our Facebook page.

We’d also like to ask for support from our dedicated members…

The SMC Dallas Charity Tweet Drive and Pub Crawl is fast approaching and we need your help!

Raise your hand if the following applies to you:

  • Do you represent a company or have one as a client?
  • Would they want exposure to over a hundred social media professionals and all their Twitter followings?
  • Do they have $350 to spare to a worthy cause?

Then you’ve got the perfect company to sponsor the Tweet Drive! All monetary donations, i.e. from AWESOME COMPANY SPONSORS, will go to Vogel Alcove, a fantastic charitable organization that has been helping homeless children for over twenty years.

As a reward for sponsoring, your company will get its logo on the Eventbrite page and on the national TweetDrive website. Your company can join the ranks of other corporate Tweet Drive sponsors such as Auntie Anne’s, Popchips, and Optimal Media Group.

Interested? Email Mariam Shahab at or Shilpa Nicodemus for details.

Check out the registration page on Eventbrite for more info on the TweetDrive Event, including registration, which is free.

T-Mobile 4 G Service Now Available in More Markets and on New Devices

We are excited to welcome Amber Naslund to Texas tomorrow! Check here if you want to know more about Amber or what’s planned for tomorrow (or ya know do some “social research” on who will be there). The purpose of this post it to let you know about some pretty cool developments with our event sponsor T-Mobile. I’d first like to say for a company looking to connect with some local techies SMCDallas is the way to go! “Share life – in an instant”… sounds like us ehh?

T-Mobile SMC Dallas

On to the good stuff…

On November 2nd, T-Mobile announced the expansion of its 4G mobile broadband network and introduced two new products designed to tap into its 4G service.

T-Mobile expanded the availability of its 4G network to six additional metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Ill.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Louisville, Ky.; and Raleigh- Durham and Wilmington, N.C. T-Mobile customers with 4G devices in 75 metropolitan areas can now enjoy faster Web browsing, uninterrupted video streaming and quicker downloads at no additional cost.

Some details from from T-Mobile.

“Consumers do not understand the technical alphabet soup of technologies involved in 4G, but for our purposes we define WiMAX, LTE and HSPA+ as 4G technologies,” said Chris Nicoll, distinguished research fellow, Yankee Group. ―HSPA+ is evolving a far more ambitious and long-term road map than was originally envisioned. T-Mobile is using an upgrade to HSPA+ to deliver faster 4G speeds today and is quickly bringing a number of HSPA+ devices to market that greatly enhance the mobile data experience for its customers.

I think “technical alphabet soup” will be joining my vocabularly. Something to note, “In contrast to some of our competitors, we’re not charging customers more to benefit from the 4G performance on our network”. That’s always good news!

And of course the social nerds want to know:

America’s largest 4G network lets you share moments and stay connected in new and innovative ways. Video chat, share HD video, and download photos and other files—all at blazing-fast speeds.

Short for “fourth generation,” 4G is about performance and provides our fastest data speeds, up to three times faster than Verizon’s standard 3G networks, while allowing simultaneous voice and data capabilities for the ultimate wireless voice and data experience. (For example, you can make a call at the same time you’re surfing the Web.) T-Mobile offers America’s largest 4G network, using HSPA+ technology to offer theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps and peak upload speeds of up to 5.7 Mbps. This allows many users to experience a mobile broadband experience comparable to the high-speed connections of a home or work computer.

The answer to the questions you are all asking?

T-Mobile plans to offer a selection of affordable data plans for both smartphones and broadband products, with smartphone data plans starting as low as $10/month. T-Mobile customers do not pay a premium for access to its 4G network. For more information on T-Mobile products, services, pricing and promotions, visit http://www.t-mobile.com.

A little look into the future for T-Mobile: “By the end of 2010, T-Mobile is on pace to expand its 4G footprint to reach 200 million people in 100 major metropolitan areas.” Be sure to say hi to the folks from T-Mobile at the event and of course they’d be happy to answer questions. Some videos and more details are available here.

Amber Naslund Promises to Bring Down the House

Have you heard, Amber Naslund (aka @ambercadabra), will be in Dallas in November?! November 18th to be exact.

If for some off chance you don’t know who Amber is (are you sure you’re at the right place?) her twitter sized bio tells us that she’s VP of Social Strategy for Radian6. Constructive heretic. Pragmatist. Musician. Intellectual adventurer. Bibliophile. Word nerd. If that’s not enough information for you, she has a more in-depth bio here.

I am excited to hear Amber because a) she’s awesome AND b) a little birdie told me (ok her blog) that, because of our dear friend Scott Stratten, Amber is pulling out all the stops in her speaking gigs these days.

In fact, here’s a promise from Amber (except from How Scott Stratten Kicked My Ass):

So thanks, Scott. For being an awesome friend, but for kicking my ass when you didn’t even know you’d done it. Thanks to the rest of you for saying “hell yeah” and reminding me that perhaps “jackass” suits me after all.

And you can bet that if I’m somewhere in a room with you and I’m giving a speech, you’re going to get everything I’ve got, bitches.

Until then….

So, what do you say… have you registered yet? Have you invited your entire office to join?

PS: We are still looking for sponsors for this event, if you’ve ever been to an SMCDallas event you know the kinda love we give our sponsors!

The Social Network Movie Screening with #SMCDallas

In just a few short days a theater full of social geeks will be watching “The Social Network” aka “The Facebook Movie” together. While I must say I am looking forward to seeing the movie, I am more excited about the conversations to follow the movie. It’s not often (ok never) that I get to converse with folks leaving a theater about what they thought of the movie.

If you haven’t already seen the movie trailer, or just want to watch it again, here it be:

As with each of our events the club is honored to have a fabulous sponsor (and no I’m not just saying that because I’m the Dallas Community Manager for Bizzy). SMCDallas loves all of our sponsors! Be sure to give some social media love to Bizzy – you can do so via twitter (@Bizzy & @BizzyDallas), Facebook and of course by signing up on Bizzy.com. Bizzy will soon be looking for some beta testers in the Dallas area. Here’s a quick video to learn about Bizzy:

And last, but certainly not least, one of the major advantages of being a part of the Social Media Club of Dallas is that YOU get to help us with by being the Media in Social Media Club of Dallas! So I’ll ask, have you helped promote this (or future events) via Twitter, Facebook, Yelp, LinkedIn (did I forget any?) by sharing event details and inviting your friends/social connections? While we are talking club advantages did you know we have an Annual Membership Program that saves you some surious monies?

If you’re not registered yet (you might wanna hurry we are about to sell out!) hop on our over to our dear friends Eventbrite to get your ticket on. http://smcdallasfb.eventbrite.com/

See ya on 10/7!
